It is nearly eight years since this book was 1st printed.  I gift it, unaltered, within the low cost Edition; and such of my opinions because it expresses, square measure quite unmoved too.

My readers have opportunities of decision making for themselves whether or not the influences and tendencies that I distrust in America, have any existence not in my imagination. they will examine for themselves whether or not there has been something within the public career of that country

throughout these past eight years, or whether or not there's something in its gift position, reception or abroad, that suggests that those influences and tendencies very do exist.  As they realize the very fact, they're going to choose Maine.  If they recognise any evidences of wrong-going in any direction that I actually have indicated, they're going to acknowledge that I had reason in what I wrote.  If they recognise no such factor, they're going to think about Maine altogether mistaken.


Prejudiced, I ne'er are otherwise than in favour of the u.  s..  No traveler will ever have set foot on those shores, with a stronger religion within the Republic than I had, once I landed in America.

I intentionally abstain from extending these observations to any length. I actually have nothing to defend, or to clarify away. the reality is that the truth; and neither infantile absurdities, nor unscrupulous contradictions, will build it otherwise. the world would still move around the sun, although the entire Catholic Church aforementioned No.

p. viiiI have several friends in America, and feel a grateful interest within the country.  To represent Maine as viewing it with ill-nature, animosity, or disposition, is just to try and do a really foolish factor, that is usually a really straightforward one; and that I actually have forgotten for eight years, and will disregard for eighty a lot of.
